Trauma

Picture
Most people experience hardships in life. However, some hardships  such as abuse, severe neglect, or devastating loss can change a person's emotional, cognitive, and physiological functioning; these hardships may qualify as psychological trauma. Trauma is a complex phenomenon: the type and duration of the traumatic experience(s), the age at which you experience the event(s), the nature of your support system, and your appraisal of the event(s) - among other factors - all contribute to the landscape of your trauma.

"The most beautiful people we have known are those who have known defeat, known suffering, known struggle, known loss, and have found their way out of those depths"

-Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

Importantly, psychological trauma is associated with a host of other behavioral, psychological, and physiological symptoms that may interfere with appropriate diagnosis and effective treatment. For instance, depression, irritability, sleep disturbances, recurring headaches or stomach pains, and substance abuse may all signify unaddressed trauma.

Although addressing your trauma may feel daunting, living with unhealed trauma can be severely limiting; it may constrain all aspects of your life and prevent you from flourishing into the person you were meant to be. We encourage you to consider treatment with one of our skilled clinicians. Our therapists and psychologists have extensive training to help you process the multifaceted aspect of trauma. Reach out to SALT today and take your first step in overcoming your trauma.
