Psychological Assessment

Picture
Understanding more about yourself can be a rewarding and validating experience, and psychological assessments are tools that help bring clarity to this process. These assessments, administered by trained psychologists, range in scope and content, but the goal is generally the same: to inform you and your therapist of your unique constellation of qualities, abilities, strengths, and areas of growth so that together you can develop a tailored treatment plan to maximize your therapeutic journey. Often, these assessments provide a sense of relief and a feeling of being truly known for our clients, and subsequently this increases their self-confidence.

"The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge,
for the ears of the wise seek it out"

-Proverbs 18 : 15

Psychological assessments are not tests in the traditional sense; that is, they do not give passing or failing grades. They are designed to better understand you, and to help you better understand yourself. For instance, conflict at work or within social groups may be due in part to certain personality traits, interpersonal styles, anger management styles, or even anxiety; likewise, a child who struggles in school may suffer from dyslexia, attention deficits, or impulse control. Because a variety of factors may influence one's personal and professional wellbeing, the right assessments can provide great diagnostic value.

Typically, you will meet with one of our psychologists for an intake appointment prior to any assessments. In the appointment our psychologist will ask you questions about your concerns and what you would like to learn about yourself, and you will have ample opportunity to share any information and ask any questions that you may have about the process. From here, our psychologist will decide which assessments will best suit your needs, and will schedule these with you. The type of assessments will dictate the amount of time needed, but a general battery of assessments takes between three and eight hours, and can be scheduled over multiple days if needed. Sometimes, a sense of anticipation leads people to research strategies for answering questions. This is not advised; it is always best to be yourself and answer truthfully. Having a predetermined answering strategy that is not natural to you can skew your results in unintended ways, or render the results invalid, and thus distort the interpretation of your therapeutic needs.
