Stress Management

Picture
Stress is a familiar part of life, and it can come from many areas and manifest in a variety of ways. Common stressors include too many obligations, financial concerns, and interpersonal conflict. However, stressors may also be less well defined; stress can arise from a feeling of not reaching one's potential, a lack of purpose or meaning, or identification with a marginalized social group. Moreover, a person's temperament and coping style affect how one perceives a stressful situation, and how long that person feels the effects of stress.

"Beware the barrenness of a busy life"

-Socrates

Despite the difficulties stress can cause, it is a necessary part of a life. Eustress is the term given to the moderate amounts of stress we feel that motivate us toward enjoyable, necessary, or fulfilling experiences. For instance, the anticipation one feels starting a new job, or the challenge one experiences of learning a desirable new skill are forms of eustress. When stress feels overwhelming, or begins to interfere with our ability to live rewarding lives, it becomes distress.

Distress is a significant problem in today's society. Our bodies are naturally designed to cope with stressors, but it was not designed to cope with perpetual and persistent stress. This persistent stress can have long-lasting and devastating effects on our physiological and psychological health. Chronic inflammation, cardiovascular disease, immune deficiencies, high blood sugar, decreased libido, and erectile dysfunction, are just a few of the physiological effects of persistent stress; psychologically, prolonged stress can lead to depression, anxiety, irritability, impulsive behaviors, concentration problems, and rumination, among other symptoms.

There is good news, however. Our skilled therapists are experts at helping their clients manage stress so that it stays eustress and not distress. They will help you understand the stressors in your life, how it affects you, and work with you to build strong coping skills that leverage your natural temperament style. Reach out to us today and regain control over your stress so that you can live an abundant and fulfilled life!
