Substance Abuse and Dependence
Substance abuse is the pattern of using a substance - legal or illegal - that causes significant problems or distress, or that occasions dangerous situations such as driving while under the influence. Substance dependence refers to the abuse of substances despite these negative and dangerous consequences. The most common substances of abuse and dependence include alcohol, marijuana, prescription medications (e.g., pain, stimulant, and anxiety medications), methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin and other opiates, hallucinogens, and inhalants.
